On the French Riviera, Château Eza is entering a new chapter. Perched in the heart of a medieval village, this luxury hotel is modernizing its rooms and reinventing its gastronomic offering to welcome the summer season with a refreshed experience—where historic heritage meets the art of Riviera living.

Nestled on the dramatic heights of Èze, one of the Mediterranean’s most spectacular villages, Château Eza overlooks the Côte d’Azur between Nice and Monaco. This former residence, over 400 years old, was once home to a Swedish prince and still retains traces of his distinctive presence. From its terraces, the view stretches across an endless horizon where sea and sky merge. Inside, the 14 individually designed rooms and suites extend this sense of rare intimacy, blending medieval charm with contemporary comfort in a delicate balance. The property also features two dining venues inspired by the spirit of the French Riviera, making Château Eza a singular destination—both a historic retreat and a sensory experience.

A Preserved Medieval Setting, Born from a Prince’s Passion

Suspended between sky and sea, Château Eza seems untouched by time. Its ancient stones, narrow alleyways, and hanging gardens captivated Prince Wilhelm of Sweden during his first visit to Èze in 1920. Enchanted by this extraordinary setting, he gradually acquired several village houses, combining them into his winter residence. After his departure in 1953, the property entered a new chapter under André Rochat, General Delegate of the Red Cross, who restored it to life and prominence starting in 1976. A few years later, the spirit of the place opened to the public—first as a tea room, then as a guesthouse, before officially becoming a hotel in 1987.

Today, Château Eza preserves the very medieval character that once charmed the Swedish prince. The setting feels authentic, almost theatrical, offering travelers a rare sensation: not merely observing history, but inhabiting it.

A Reimagined Medieval Spirit in the Rooms

Modernizing a place steeped in history without compromising its identity requires a delicate balance. To achieve this transformation, Château Eza collaborated with Italian house Bressano, whose bespoke furnishings engage in a dialogue with the building’s historic architecture. Raw stone walls meet more contemporary lines, bringing lightness to the historic volumes without ever disrupting their character. The approach preserves the castle’s medieval soul while meeting the expectations of guests seeking comfort and understated elegance.

In the Superior and Deluxe rooms, each space feels like a suspended retreat. From private balconies, the eye wanders across the hills of Èze or the Riviera horizon, in near-perfect tranquility. Inside, dark wood, carved details, and soft lighting create an intimate atmosphere inspired by historic noble residences. Doorframes and mirrors, crafted in a more traditional style, subtly echo the aesthetic of bygone castles.

Contemporary comfort enhances the experience without overpowering the décor. Fine linens, thoughtfully integrated amenities, and elegant finishes create a refined moment where luxury is expressed with restraint—in the richness of materials, the softness of light, and the harmony of proportions.

L’Horizon, the New Mediterranean Dining Experience

Opened on May 1st, L’Horizon is a Mediterranean restaurant celebrating local flavors inspired by regional terroir. Set on a terrace overlooking the dramatic drop below, it enhances the Riviera atmosphere with breathtaking views. Seating just 50 guests for lunch, it attracts both visitors and locals seeking an intimate and charming escape.

At the helm is Chef Justin Schmitt, whose vision is shaped by experience alongside leading figures in French gastronomy, from Alain Senderens at Lucas Carton to Éric Fréchon at Le Bristol. Originally from Alsace, he now creates a precise, sun-drenched Mediterranean cuisine where tradition and modernity meet with subtlety. He embraces this new challenge naturally: “My cuisine adapts perfectly to the South.”

This new venue complements the hotel’s two existing culinary experiences: the Gastronomic Restaurant and the lounge bar. The former offers classic French and Mediterranean cuisine, awarded a Michelin star and open every evening. The latter, with its duplex terrace, provides sweeping views over the turquoise waters of the French Riviera.

With this renewed momentum driven by gastronomy and the reimagining of its spaces, Château Eza reaffirms its ambition to harmonize heritage with contemporary lifestyle. Suspended above the Mediterranean, it continues to cultivate its rare ability to transform a stay on the Riviera into a timeless escape.
