In Argassi, Utopia reinterprets Greek cuisine as the sun sets over the Ionian Sea.

In our Indian Summer issue, we head to Argassi, on the island’s east coast, to discover Utopia, a restaurant whose cuisine takes a contemporary approach to Greek culinary traditions. Set facing the Ionian Sea, the restaurant enjoys an open view across the landscape, with a terrace that naturally lends itself to evening dining.

The restaurant first stands out for the way it approaches local produce and traditional recipes. The menu draws on some of the fundamentals of Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, while presenting them through more contemporary compositions. Local ingredients play an important role, with dishes built around different combinations, textures and presentations, without moving away from the flavours that define Greek cuisine.

This approach allows familiar tastes to be rediscovered through a style of cooking that is less closely tied to the traditional codes of the Greek taverna. The idea is not to transform the recipes, but to give them a more contemporary interpretation, shaped for a restaurant setting.

The focus on local produce also extends to the wine selection. The list gives pride of place to Greek wineries and highlights different wine-growing regions across the country. It is an approach that complements the dishes while offering an opportunity to discover a side of Greek wine production that remains relatively unfamiliar beyond its best-known names.

Outside, the restaurant benefits from an unobstructed view of the sea. Towards the end of the day, the sun gradually marks the transition from daylight to night as dinner continues. The setting therefore evolves throughout the meal, without ever taking attention away from the food.

Utopia’s appeal lies in this combination of cuisine inspired by Greece’s gastronomic heritage, a focus on local produce, a wine selection primarily drawn from Greek vineyards and a location that gives the surrounding landscape an important role in the evening.

In the pages of our Été Indien issue, this stop forms part of a broader exploration of Greece’s contemporary culinary scene, where new addresses are finding ways to reinterpret tradition while preserving its identity.
